about

A journey made up of a selection of new material, all written & produced in Autumn 2020.

One Way Trip To Titan is inspired by the Cassini-Huygens probe to Saturn & its largest moon. The piece was composed for a National Astronomy Week tie-in event.

Returning to a Home I've Never Known was inspired by a writing trip to Scotland in September 2020. The trip was funded by a grant from Help Musicians UK & I found myself inspired by the landscape, architecture & history of the areas I visited. I returned home with half a dozen new pieces in progress, of which this is the first to be finished. The track received its first broadcast on BBC Introducing in November 2020 & is my first solo release.

A Space Remains is a slower, more deliberate orchestral composition. With this piece, I was harking back to a few fallen digital comrades from video games played over the last decade or so. Perhaps anyone that has spent hours in Tamriel, wandering on The Citadel or exploring the Sword Coast might find this relatable!

The final piece, Pi, was a chance to use a different approach to composing new work. It's made up of the numbers of Pi to 8 decimal places (the first note worth 3 beats, then 1, then 4, then 1 etc). The numbers are also converted into intervals for some of the harmonic and melodic lines with 1 being equal to E, 3 being G, 9 being F# and so on. The tubular bell plays the same pitch at the start of the first 3 cycles, then a different pitch for the next one, and a lower pitch for the final four (representing 3.14). As Pi is used in calculating the characteristics of a circle, it seemed a good choice to close this first EP.
